District Council set to commit to combat flooding

With weather warnings issued up and down the UK, it was a close call this weekend as to what impact this may have on our communities across the district. Thankfully, Newark and Sherwood was relatively unscathed…this time. But sadly, we always know there will be a next time. A motion pledging to do everything possible to reduce the impact of local flooding will be presented tonight at Newark and Sherwood District Council’s Full Council meeting. Councillor Paul Taylor, Portfolio Holder for Public Protection and Community Relations, will put the motion forward, encouraging fellow Councillors to vote for its adoption and cement a promise that the District Council will do all it can to help minimise the catastrophic consequences seen in recent floods.

Planning application submitted for Gypsy and Traveller pitch provision in Newark.

Our Gypsy and Traveller communities form a longstanding part of Newark and Sherwood’s population.  As any population grows, Government legislation requires that Councils across the UK plan to meet the increasing housing needs of all sections of their local community. Southwell Leisure Centre Update

In 2021, Newark and Sherwood District Council (NSDC) took over the management of Southwell Leisure Centre. The Centre is owned by a Charity, Southwell Leisure Centre Trust, who could not afford to maintain it. The Centre is 60 years old and the swimming pool had to be closed as there was a substantial leak. The District Council wishes to build a new swimming pool and is committing £5.5m to do so.
