Simpler Recycling
There are new items you can add to your recycling as part of the new Simpler Recycling rules.

What you can include
When sorting your recycling for collection, you can include:
- paper - including newspapers, envelopes, magazines, catalogues and junk mail
- cardboard – including cardboard boxes used for packaging, egg boxes and cardboard tubes
- cartons – including milk, juice, soap and plant-based drinks
- plastics – including tubs and trays (e.g., fruit punnets, meat trays, cream cheese tubs), tubes (e.g., toothpaste and cosmetic tubes), drink bottles with attached caps, shower gel and shampoo bottles, cleaning product bottles, yoghurt pots, and margarine tubs
- tins and cans – including empty food tins, drink cans and aerosol cans
- aluminium – including kitchen foil and foil trays, aluminium bottles (e.g., shampoo or soap), empty aerosol bottles, and aluminium tubes (e.g., tomato purée)
- metal – including jars and lids
Currently less than 5% of waste in Nottinghamshire is sent to landfill and that is thanks to everyone playing their part in helping to recycle.
Preparing your recycling
When preparing your recycling for collection, remember to:
- wash away any food residue by rinsing items, letting them dry, and replacing lids including trigger and pump sprays
- squeeze out contents of aluminium and plastic tubes before replacing lids
- not use plastic bags
- separate your bathroom rubbish to make it easier when you take the bins out
- squash plastic bottles and cans and flatten packaging and cardboard to save space
All items should be empty, clean, dry and loose. We will not collect any recycling that is not in your bin. The lid on the bin must be closed.
