Intake Wood FAQs (Wildlife and environment)

What checks are done for birds before work starts?

Works started on site in November and the final works were due to be completed by the end of April. The contractors undertaking the work have extensive experience and work in line with national guidance around this. Please be assured they do visual checks in line with the Forestry Commission rules for nests and birds in each tree before starting any works.

Do you check inside bird boxes before you start work?

The height of many boxes makes it impossible to look inside boxes directly and to do so would disturb any nesting birds. Visual checks are done to see if there are any signs of birds entering and exiting boxes before any work starts on site.

Why are you adding more broadleaf trees and removing the pine trees?

The current pine woodland is predominately a commercial plantation, with a few native broadleaf trees. There was a big push for secure national timber production around the world wars and the majority of the coniferous plantations in the Sherwood Forest area stem from that time. The majority of these are still being harvested and replanted with the same purpose. Historically the forest would have been a mix of broadleaved forest and scrub with patches of open land and heath and it was our aim to return it to that historic Sherwood Forest.
