Apply for Council Tax discounts and exemptions

Your Council Tax bill could be reduced if you are a full-time student.

How to qualify

There are 2 levels of discount, depending on who lives in the property:

• 100% exemption if everyone in the property is a student
• 25% discount if students and non-students live in the property

Definition of student

A person is counted as a student for Council Tax purposes if one of the following applies to them:

• they study for at least 21 hours a week, for at least 24 weeks in each academic year
• they are under 20 and studying for a qualification up to A level, for at least 12 hours a week and for at least three months

How to apply

You'll need to send us a copy of your student certificate showing: 

• your name
• course name
• qualification studied towards
• the start and end date of your course

You can get this from your university or college.
