Terminal illness discount

You may be able to get money off your Council Tax bill if:

  • you are terminally ill
  • your partner who lives with you is terminally ill
  • a family member in your household is terminally ill

To qualify, you must be in receipt of Council Tax support.

You must also have a clinician completed SR1 form, which advises that the named person has a progressive disease and the expected remaining life is less than 12 months.

A 100% reduction will be applied from the date the SR1 form applies (or 1 April 2026 if dated earlier).

Relief will be paid until the end of the financial year during which death occurs. If this is in March, relief will be paid to the end of the financial year and also April of the following financial year.

If the named person lives beyond 12 months, the discount will remain ongoing.

How to apply

Any medical professional who has completed the SR1 can apply on behalf of the person who is terminally ill. This includes GPs, healthcare workers or support staff.

Please contact us with a copy of the SR1 to apply.
