Taxi licences

Why we licence taxis and private hire vehicles and what licences you will need to drive one, taxi registers, how to find more information.

Apply for a private-hire taxi operator's licence

A private hire operator's licence is required in order to be able to accept bookings for private hire vehicles.

We actually licence the premises where the bookings are taken, which must be within Newark and Sherwood District.

Fit and proper test

We will only issue you with a licence if you are deemed to be 'fit and proper'. In assessing this, we will consider the following factors:

  • whether you have a criminal record
  • your general character
  • your previous conduct (particularly in cases where the applicant has previously held a taxi licence)
  • your business practices (for example standard of record keeping and legal compliance)

The premises

You must also be able to demonstrate that the address from which you intend to operate is suitable and any necessary planning permissions have been obtained.

Any requirement for planning consent will take into account the number of vehicles to be operated from the address.

Full requirements for a private hire operators licence are set out in our taxi policy.
