Taxi licences

Why we licence taxis and private hire vehicles and what licences you will need to drive one, taxi registers, how to find more information.

Overview

The council is responsible for setting taxi fares and for issuing licences to individuals who wish to drive either private hire cars or hackney carriages. We also licence vehicles and private hire operators.

Licensing provides a visible assurance to the public that:

  • the vehicle has been checked for safety
  • the driver has been checked medically, and is a fit and proper person to hold a licence

If you wish to drive a taxi or private hire vehicle you will need a licence both for your vehicle and you, individually, as the driver.

You can find out how to apply in this guide.

Registers

Registers for licensed drivers and vehicles are available at the council offices for public inspection. If you are interested in viewing this information, contact us using the details at the bottom of this page.

A register of operators is available online: Licensed taxi operators in Newark and Sherwood (PDF, 143kb)

We also keep a list of operators providing wheelchair accessible vehicles.
