Information on storage and maintenance

How can I reduce smells from my food waste caddy?

It won’t smell any more than your green bin does now!

Unlike your green bin and silver bin, your food waste will be collected every week. This means food won't be left sitting for two weeks, helping to reduce smells, discourage files and keep your caddies cleaner.

We do have some top tips you can follow:

  • Keep you caddies out of direct sunlight.
  • Always keep the lids fully closed to help keep flies out.
  • Don’t put hot food straight into the caddy – let it cool first.
  • Empty your kitchen caddy into your outdoor caddy regularly, instead of waiting until it’s completely fully.
  • Lock your outdoor caddy by lifting the handle after adding food waste.
  • Rinse your kitchen caddy regularly using hot water and a little bit of washing-up liquid, white vinegar or lemon juice. You caddy is also dishwasher proof if you’d prefer to wash it that way.

I've heard the outdoor food waste caddy can blow away in windy weather. What can I do to prevent this?

You can place your food waste caddy behind a wall, fence or heavy wheelie bin to block strong gusts. Make sure the handle or locking mechanism clicks firmly into place so the wind cannot catch the lid and flip the container open.

Please make sure you put your bin in its usual collection point on your bin collection day so that it is visible to operatives.
