Homeless due to domestic abuse
Domestic abuse includes any incident or pattern of controlling, coercive, threatening, violent or abusive behaviour. Abuse may be:
- emotional
- physical
- psychological
- sexual
- financial
- coercive or controlling
Domestic abuse can happen between partners, ex-partners or family members, regardless of gender or sexuality.
If you feel afraid of someone close to you, you may be experiencing domestic abuse.
Abusive behaviours
You might be experiencing domestic abuse if your partner:
- calls you names or puts you down
- threatens you or your children
- acts violently towards you
- prevents you from seeing friends or family
- controls your money
- harms you or makes you feel unsafe
If any of these apply, support is available.
If you are in immediate danger, call 999 for the police.
Your rights
Under the Domestic Abuse Act 2021, anyone who cannot remain in their home because of domestic abuse is treated as automatically in priority need for homelessness assistance.
