A mutual exchange is when you want to swap your home with another council or housing association tenant.
Your swap must be with a tenant with the same type of tenancy – assured or secure.
Shelter defines clearly what a mutual exchange is and who qualifies.
Finding a home
To swap you’ll need to register on the Homeswapper website, a free service for Newark and Sherwood District Council tenants.
The site features over 200,000 homes from all over the country and 90% of users find a match within 24 hours.
How to apply
Once you have found someone to swap with, you will both need to apply for permission from your landlords and complete a mutual exchange form.
You can ask us for a form, or any other help, using the contact details at the bottom of the page.
You cannot swap until you have permission in writing from us. We have 6 weeks to consider your application.
Rejected applications
We can only refuse an exchange on certain legal grounds. These may include,
but are not limited to:
- the property you wish to move to is too small or too large for your
household - you are in rent arrears and have been served a Notice of Seeking
Possession - the property has special features that make it suitable for a tenant with
a disability
For more information read the government legislation.
