Electricity is essential but must be treated with care. Misusing electrical goods or attempting DIY wiring can lead to electric shock, fire, or even death.

Electrical safety at home

Wiring

Never carry out DIY electrical work. Mistakes can cause overheating, fires, and electric shock.

All wiring must be completed by a qualified electrician.

Sockets

Do not overload sockets or use multiple extension leads.

Report any signs of burning, cracked, or broken sockets to us immediately using the contact details at the bottom of this page.

Electrical goods

To be safe when using electric appliances:

• buy electrical goods from reputable retailers that meet British Standards
• inspect items before use for damage, exposed wires, or burn marks
• do not leave appliances switched on unattended
• unplug chargers and transformers when not in use

Electrical installation changes

Tenants must obtain permission before altering or adding to your electrical installation. This includes 

• installing EV chargers
• adding power to sheds or garages.

If permission is granted, you must provide certification from a competent, accredited electrician in line with current standards.

Electrical inspections

As a council tenants you must allow us access to your home for an Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) once every 5 years. During the visit, our qualified electricians will:

• inspect sockets, light fittings, and wiring
• carry out any necessary repairs during the visit
