Dangerous wild animal licences

First check the dangerous animals list (PDF, 48kb) to see which animals you need to hold a licence to keep.

This licence is not required if the animal is kept in a zoo, circus, pet shop, or registered scientific establishment.

Apply for a licence

You will need to download, complete and return the dangerous wild animals licence application form (.doc, 69kb).

Send it to us using the contact details at the bottom of this page.

Fees

We charge an application fee of £255, which must be paid using our online payments portal.

Make a note of your receipt number on your application form.

What happens next

Once we have the application, we will arrange a visit from a vet and a council officer. We may also consult with your neighbours.

Licences are issued when we are satisfied that:

  • granting the licence would not be contrary to public interest on the grounds of safety or nuisance
  • the applicant is a suitable person
  • the animal’s accommodation is adequate, secure and safeguards the welfare of the animal
