There are 47 important English battlefields in Historic England's register of historic battlefields.
Search for battlefields on our planning heritage map
The register exists to:
- give sites protection through the planning system
- promote a better understanding of their significance
Registered sites are not always open to the public, and, other than via public rights of way, access depends on local arrangements with owners.
To merit registration, battlefields must be:
- of national significance
- securely established
- still recognisable today
