Vote in person

We'll send you a polling card if you are registered and eligible to vote in an election or referendum.

You should receive your polling card three to four weeks before the election or referendum. Let us know if you think you're registered but do not receive a polling card - contact customer services using the details at the bottom of this page.

Your polling card will tell you where and when you can vote.

Polling places, polling stations and wards

You can find your nearest polling station on the Democracy Club website.

A polling place is a building or area in which a polling station is located.

A polling station is the room or area within the polling place where voting takes place.

You're allocated a polling station based on where you live. You can only vote at the polling station you are allocated to. This may not always be the one nearest to you.

Voter ID

Voters in England need to show photo ID to vote at polling stations in all elections.

This includes:

  • UK parliamentary elections, including general elections, by-elections and recall petitions
  • Local elections and by-elections
  • Police and Crime Commissioner elections

The Electoral Commission has more information on:

  • accepted forms of photo ID
  • how to apply for a free Voter Authority Certificate, allowing you to vote without photo ID
  • what to expect on polling day
