Apply for Council Tax empty property discounts

If your property is unoccupied for a short period of time you may be able to reduce your Council Tax bill.

Properties that are empty for over a year may have to pay double, triple or even four times the normal Council Tax rate for the property. Find out more about the empty property premium.

Furnished but not occupied properties

If a property is furnished but not occupied, no council tax discount will apply.

Unfurnished but not occupied properties

A 25% discount applies for the first 84 days from when a property first becomes unfurnished and unoccupied. After this time, a full charge is payable and a new bill with revised instalments will be issued.

This discount is a property discount, it is not a personal entitlement. A change in occupier does not automatically restart the 84-day discount period.

Unoccupied annexes

An annexe is exempt from Council Tax if:

  • it is no one's main home
  • it is a self-contained annexe
  • it has its own Council Tax band
  • because of planning controls it cannot be let or sold separately
